Federal Court

Ronald W. Hayward

If you are charged with a federal crime, it is extremely important that you retain an attorney who has extensive experience with the nature of federal investigations and prosecutions. In the federal system, the charges and penalties are almost always more severe than state charges.

Additionally, it is important to note that some violations can be charged in either federal or state court. Child pornography, drug offenses and certain embezzlement cases fall into this category. If the charges are in federal court, they will be felonies and the United States Attorney will most likely be seeking a term of incarceration in a federal institution. Because charges can be federal or state and that the penalties in federal court are much more severe than state court, it is very important to retain a lawyer at the earliest time. Ignoring the matter will not make the problem go away, it will only make it much worse and limit the potential ways to resolve the case.

I was a federal prosecutor for nearly 15 years. During that time, I worked in the Criminal Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice where I prosecuted federal tax violations. I was also an Assistant United States Attorney in the Middle District of Florida. While in Florida, I handled a wide variety of cases ranging from drug and gun violations to major bank fraud offenses.

This experience, along with the years as a criminal defense attorney, allows me to see and evaluate a case form both perspectives.

Finally, if federal agents come knocking on your door, remember, don’t try to handle the matter on your own. Call me before you say or do anything.
